Thanks for your suggestion, even though the BIOS was configured for ECC and the underside of the R710's lid said for that configuration the memory much be in slots A2/3/5/6/8/9 and B/3/5/6/8/9 - I followed your suggestion and put them in A1/4/2/5 and B/4/2/5, which booted. PowerEdge R710 RAM 20GB. 4GHz 4 core CPUs Perc H200 -Bez. The part number M391B5673EH1-CH9 of this memory corresponds to 2 GB ECC UDIMM.
